同轴电缆用作无线电频率信号的传输线。它的应用包括将无线电发射机和接收机连接到天线、计算机网络（Internet）连接、数字音频（s/pdif）和分发有线电视信号的馈线。与其他类型的无线电传输线相比，同轴电缆的一个优点是，在理想的同轴电缆中，携带信号的电磁场只存在于内部和外部导体之间的空间中。这使得同轴电缆可以安装在像水槽这样的金属物体旁边，而不会在其他类型的传输线路上发生断电。同轴电缆也提供了外部电磁干扰信号的保护。
