常见的很多镀层装饰件，如汽车的保护条，通常是用多层镍（Ni）+镀铬（Cr）层的工艺。多层镍中，半光亮镍镀层作为光亮镀镍的必备打底层，其性能直接影响获得的镀层的性能，如抗腐蚀的特殊要求，因此多层镍中各镍层的电位差常为评估指标纳入厂商和买家的相关标准中。

说到多层镍，就不得不提镍封颗粒数了。

镍封实际是一种复合镀层，是在光亮镍中加入二氧化硅或碳酸钡等不导电微米级颗粒，在实际应用中对镀层起到防腐作用。但这些镍封颗粒并不全都起到防腐效果，根据经验只有10%的镍封颗粒有这种作用，那就是常说的活性点，而微孔数（微裂纹数）测试就是为了验证有多少正常工作的镍封颗粒数。
